Knowing how to measure eyebrows to get the best shape for your face is easy! If you’ve been going to salon after salon and specialist after specialist to try to achieve eyebrows that are groomed perfectly for your face, but haven’t found the one that just gets it this is what you need. Never look in the mirror with horror again after a well-meaning technician ruined your eyebrows. Plus, you will be saving time and money by grooming your eyebrows yourself instead of going to the salon.

What You’ll Need To Map And Groom Your Eyebrows

  • Clear eyebrow gel
  • Eyebrow scissors
  • Thread
  • Light colored eyeshadow (white, ivory, beige)
  • Tweezers
  • Eyebrow razor

How To Measure Your Eyebrows To Get The Perfect Eyebrow Shape

Prep Your Eyebrows and String

Take the clear eyebrow gel and brush your eyebrows in the general direction you lay them on a daily basis. This is usually straight upward at the head of your brows and more angled after your arch and into the tail.

Then, cut a piece of thread long enough to comfortably reach from your chin to your forehead. This is more than you need, but it will help you grip the string more comfortably while you are measuring and making your eyebrow map.

Next, rub the pad of your index finger in the light-colored eyeshadow and rub the shadow onto the middle half of the string leaving the outer 1/4 of the string on each end untouched. This is to mark where you are measuring to make a map of your ideal eyebrow shape.

Measure Where Your Eyebrows Should End

Take the ends of the thread in each hand and make a straight line from the middle of your top lip to the edge of your nose and the outer corner of your eye. That will show you where the tail of your eyebrow should end.

Measure Where Your Arch Should Start

Make another line from the center of your lip to the middle of your nostril, to the middle of your pupil.

Map Where Your Brows Should Start

Now make a straight line from the tip of your Cupid’s Bow to where your nostril meets and up to the head of your brow.

Map The Height Of Your Eyebrows

Adding more eyeshadow to the thread if you need to, take the thread to make a horizontal line at the bottom of the head of your eyebrows. Then, make another parallel line at the top of your arches.

Measure The Highest Point Of Your Arch

Next, make a symmetrical X inside of the box between your brows. Make a line through the center of that X all the way to your temples making sure the line is highly visible.

Map The Bottom Of The Head Your Brow

Starting from where the middle parallel line and the line marking where your arch should start meet, draw a straight line to where the bottom parallel line and the vertical line meet. Everything below this line will be plucked or shaved.

Measure The Bottom Of The Tail Your Brow

Again, starting from where the middle parallel line and the line marking where your arch should start meet, draw a straight line to the very first line you made. It’s the one marking where the tail of your brow should end. You can eyeball this a little bit based on how lifted you want the tail of your brow to be. Everything below this line will also be plucked or shaved.

Map The Tops Of Your Eyebrows

Starting from the line marking the highest point of your arch, make a line connecting the top of your arch to the point where the end of your tail should be. Now make a line from where the highest point of your arch should be to the point where the vertical line and middle horizontal line meet at the head of your brow. Everything above these lines will be trimmed, plucked, or shaved.

Pluck or Shave Away!

Finally, Pluck or shave any hairs that are below the lines marking the bottom of your brow. Brush your brows straight up because they’re probably messed up from the line-making, and trim anything that’s above the lines marking the tops of your brows. Pluck or shave any stray hairs left behind. It’s probably best to round your corners a bit for a more natural look. Voila! Perfect brows.

Grooming your eyebrows at home doesn’t have to be difficult. The first time I measured my eyebrows to shape them myself it took me about 30 minutes. Now, I can be in and out in about 10. You’ll get better with practice and it is one hundred percent worth it to know how to do this yourself. You know your face better than anyone so putting the power of your brow shape back in your hands will be a game changer. You’ll never have pencil-thin 90s brows ever again unless that’s what you want.
