If looking good every day was an easy task we’d all be doing it. The truth is, learning how to look your best every day takes effort and dedication. There are only about a million things to get done each day and it can be easy to neglect a little self-care. So what is a lady to do when she wants to look her best and get her tasks done? Focus on the most important things, of course.

Why Is It Important To Look Your Best Every Day?

You may be tempted to throw on a ratty pair of sweatpants and barely touch your hair if your day consists of only moving around in your living space, but don’t do that to yourself. As the proverb goes, “clothes maketh the man,” but they also make the woman. If you are dressed like a person with no standards you will be perceived as such, even by the person looking back at you in the mirror. You don’t have to wear ball gowns around the house (though that might be quite fun), but you should put some effort in your appearance.

Looking good is even more important if you are leaving the house because you never know who you’ll run into. Your ex, your potential next, that girl who always made fun of you in high school? The possibilities are endless. You never know who sees you in public so it is always a good practice to look presentable. Again, no need for ball gowns, just a little care.

Easy Ways To Look Great Every Day

Have a Go-To Hair Style

If you have the skilled hands of a seasoned hairdresser available to you at any given moment, congratulations! We may be a little jealous. If you don’t have a hairdresser at the ready to assist you, you should have one simple hairstyle that you can nail every single time. It could be a twist out, a sleek ponytail or bun, or even beachy waves. Whatever the style may be, make sure you can do it yourself from wash to finish. There was a collective moment of terror in 2020 when all of the salons had to close and those who had no idea how to care for their hair were out of luck. Hopefully, an event like that doesn’t happen to us again, but it can only help if you know how to handle your locs yourself.

Take Care of Your Skin

Clear, glowing skin looks more appealing. What other reason would we do crazy things like at home derma rolling and extractions all in the hopes of achieving glassy smooth perfection of our skin? When your skin looks nice and healthy it’s so much easier to get ready every day. You can easily wear little or no makeup and be good to go. Find a routine that works for you and your skin type and stick with it. Don’t underestimate what a good moisturizer can do and no matter what you do, don’t skip SPF.

Have Well-Kept Nails

Dirty, yellowed, or jagged nails are not a good look. Neither is chipped nail polish or grown off acrylics. If you love the look and longevity of acrylic, dip, or gel nails make sure you can afford the proper upkeep. If they no longer fit your budget go to a salon to have them removed. Your nails will thank you.

If regular salon visits are not a part of your budget there are plenty of ways to keep your nails looking nice at home. There are endless tutorials on YouTube for how to give yourself a manicure and you can order a manicure kit with an array of colors for home use. You can have a really nice DIY manicure all it takes is a little practice.

Keep Your Eyebrows Groomed

Eyebrows frame your entire face. You could be put together in all other aspects but if you drop the ball here your look is not complete. It is incredibly easy to groom and shape your brows at home, but if you must have someone else do them go to a brow professional. Just because the salon says they groom brows doesn’t mean they will make you look your best. Treat your brow specialist just like you would someone that was going to color or cut your hair. Research, research, research. Find before and after pictures of their work if you can, or even better, get a recommendation from a friend or colleague.

Choose the Right Size Clothes

Yes, you can pull off the oversized look with special care. I’m not saying don’t go for it, but that look is not effortless. Clothing that is too tight isn’t a good look either. You’re looking for Goldilocks when it comes to the fit of your clothing. Not too big, not too small, but just right.

“Your clothes should be tight enough to show you’re a woman but loose enough to show you’re a lady.”

Edith Head

No one can see the number or letter on the tag of your garments. What they can see is if you’ve squeezed into something too small or are being swallowed by something too big. Do yourself a favor and pick the right size.

Get Your Clothes Tailored

Off-the-rack clothing is designed to fit most bodies and therefore ends up fitting most people less than ideally, even if you’ve chosen the right size. Taking your dresses, pants, and skirts to a tailor can make a world of difference in how they look on you whether you paid $10, $100, or $1000 for them. Tailoring is your friend. A good tailor can make your clothes look like they were made especially for you.

Steam or Iron Your Clothes

You may be accustomed to ironing your clothes before you wear them, but you should really try steaming or ironing them before you put them away after washing them. It makes your closet and dresser look so much more organized and welcoming, almost like a boutique showroom. Plus, there will be virtually no wrinkles when you get ready to wear a particular garment so you can grab and go without looking like you just rolled out of bed. If it got a little wrinkled while it was in the dresser or closet it won’t take nearly as long to steam those out before you wear it now as if you hadn’t ironed it in the first place.

Choose Your Accessories Wisely

A great look has just the right amount of accessories and there is no standard formula for what the right amount is. It is more a matter of personal choice. However, our philosophy is that it is better to be under-accessorized than over. If you’re choosing a statement-making piece let it make the statement on its own by keeping all other accessories minimal. Try on the accessories you want to wear with your outfit in front of a full-length mirror to see the full effect. If it looks off keep editing. Swap the earrings, ditch the necklace, change your shoes, etc. Keep making tweaks until you’re satisfied with the outcome.

Mind Your Posture

Good posture conveys confidence and helps you not end up as a hunched-over old lady. When you stand and sit up straight you appear like you are important, which you are. Great posture will help you act like it, thus helping you look your best.

Stay Hydrated

Water is life-giving. When you are properly hydrated you just glow. Conventional wisdom is to drink eight 8oz glasses of water each day, but we aren’t all the same. You may have better luck dividing your body weight in half and drinking that many ounces per day. For example, if you weigh 142 pounds you’d aim to drink 71 ounces of water per day. 142 divided in half is 71. This is more than the recommended 64 ounces for optimal hydration. try both methods and see which one makes you feel better.

Eat Well

Eating well doesn’t mean adopting any crazy diets. That’s the opposite of eating well. You should eat food that nourishes you and make you feel good. Eat less food that has been overly processed or manufactured. That’s code for more vegetables, fruit, and whole foods. These kinds of foods will be more nutrient-dense and healthier for you. Your body will reward you by giving you more energy, better skin, better hair, and nails.

Final Thoughts On How To Look Good Every Day

Looking good is partially subjective to personal style, but looking clean, well-groomed, and healthy will look good no matter what your style is. If you want to look your absolute best every single day, focus on being (and thus appearing) healthy in general.

Looks should not matter, but they do. Looking your best every day allows you to have more control over how people perceive you. If you are dressed like and have the mannerisms and etiquette of a woman who values herself and sees herself as worthy of the effort people will treat you as such. You will be wowed by the perks.
